You are standing on the road and you wish to look in the direction that "the road is going now". If you look at a point "down the road" a little ways, that is certainly a good start. Of course it won't be correct because the road is curving and so will have "curved away" from the correct direction. Now, if you look at a point near to you, the road will not have "curved away" quite as much.
